Details

The problem

Agents can say “done”, “verified”, or “the render checks out” after the last check became stale. Failed checks, checks of another file, and parses supporting visual assertions do not establish verification. A gate can also wrongly block good work, and incomplete records can prevent a sound judgment.

How Jev is used

The headline gate is deterministic. Code identifies candidate claims, pairs recorded tool calls and results, tracks artifact changes, checks target identity and check kind, and allows only backed claims. It blocks unknown cases conservatively and reports them separately from known unbacked claims. Replay executes no transcript commands.

One typed request per session classifies every assistant message, including plans, negations, implicit final artifact delivery, and stream errors. We ask Choice questions about completion, completed stages, visual verification, or none, and whether the assertion concerns the deliverable. The model never counts checks, computes a verdict, or receives labels, gold reasons, gate decisions, or evidence totals.

We measure two uses separately:

Advisory classification: Compare typed classifications with the independent message labels. Advice never changes the headline deterministic gate.
Assisted extension: Feed classifications into the same code evidence rule and report its errors separately. This measures semantic detection.

We score missed completion assertions as classification failures and acceptance of stale evidence as evidence-rule failures. The policy defines the conservative boundaries.

What real Jev would change

Real Jev misclassified a different progress message but did not improve matched aggregate claim detection or assisted-gate outcomes over Codiv repeat 1. Codiv repeat 3 varied again; a single pass cannot establish a stable ranking. Real Jev cannot repair missing transcript evidence, certify a render's visual quality, or replace the deterministic evidence rule. This small pass does not establish performance on larger or different runs. Statements about Canny's behavior or efficacy remain claims unverified.

Results

All three full passes of openjev (Codiv free hosted) - NOT JEV are complete on the same 20 sessions and 31 messages. The first table breaks down repeat 1; the second compares repeats. Deterministic columns are code only and unchanged across passes. Assisted columns use model classifications with the same evidence rule.

Passes 1 and 2 found 19/20 claims and blocked one non-claim; pass 3 found 18/20 with no non-claim false alarm, but let the known unbacked s07_hedged assertion through. All three missed an unknown implicit final-SVG completion. The deterministic headline blocks all nine known unbacked claims with no known false blocks. The passes reuse sessions; repeats add no independent examples. The real subset has one known claim; five real claims remain unknown. RESULTS.md records every changed case and its provenance.

Cost uses the free-route basis; neither provider supplied a receipt. Codiv reported zero output tokens. Deterministic replay has no model cost or tokens, and mock outputs are excluded. The combined Codiv resources and real-Jev subset cover different cases; quality comparisons use matched cases.

On the same eight sessions (19 messages), openjev (Codiv free hosted) - NOT JEV repeat 1 and REAL JEV (OpenCode Zen free, jev-1.13-free) each found 9/10 claims, falsely classified 1/9 non-claims, and matched 16/19 exact claim types. The code detector found 10/10 claims with no false alarms and 18/19 type matches. Both assisted extensions blocked all three known unbacked claims, allowed the one known backed claim, blocked five of six unknown claims, and wrongly blocked one non-claim. They missed the same unknown implicit final-SVG completion but falsely blocked different progress messages. Neither model had an advantage in this matched first pass. On the same subset, Codiv repeat 3 found 9/10 claims with 0/9 non-claim false alarms and 17/19 exact types; its s07 false pass is outside that subset.

Real Jev's median HTTP latency was 502.8 ms. Its 159.836 s run includes pacing, lock/cooldown and local work; total HTTP time was 4.167 s. The same eight Codiv repeat-1 calls had 386.6 ms median HTTP latency, 6,797 input tokens and zero reported output tokens. We filtered those calls from the full pass rather than running them independently. RESULTS.md records matched real/synthetic strata, every failure, accounting and hash verification.

What changed from the first offline pass, and why

The original ten synthetic sessions, cached v1 results and full-transcript labels remain as historical inputs. The original code is in commits cab9512 and 52e533f.

Runs read the four committed scrubbed excerpts shared with compaction-check and need no external raw transcripts. Every assistant message has an excerpt-specific label in fixtures/excerpt_labels.json; omitted or truncated evidence is labelled unknown. The earlier full-run 1/7 result belongs to the old evaluation.
The static rule separates target identity, latest write attempt, explicit success, current check kind, later failures, missing results and omitted regions. Parallel results require IDs; positional guesses cannot establish success.
Silent output no longer counts as passing. A simple copy transfers verification only with explicit recorded success and provenance from the currently checked source. The v1 synthetic s05 and s06 labels are now unknown because their records do not prove successful copying or generator provenance.
Six new scripted cases cover negation, future intent, missing results, out-of-order results with IDs, failure after a pass, and excerpt gaps. They test rules; they do not estimate real-world frequency.
Advice classifies all messages, letting us measure missed claims and false alarms. It no longer repeats the gate's arithmetic.

The frozen dataset has 20 sessions and 31 assistant messages: 11 claims with known backed/unbacked labels, nine unknown claims, and 11 non-claims. Only one real-excerpt claim has a known evidence label; five real claims are unknown. This small real set cannot establish real-world accuracy.

Limits

This is offline counterfactual replay: “With gate” means a recorded claim would be withheld. We did not measure whether an agent would run another check, finish faster, or produce better work after a block. One author labelled the small dataset, and the scripted cases exercise chosen failure modes. The parser recognises a limited set of recorded operations; dynamic programs, truncated commands, unresolved paths and uncertain pairings may cause conservative unknowns. A successful recorded render establishes that a render ran; it cannot establish whether the illustration is correct.
